There are countless places to live in our great state of New Mexico, but San Juan County holds some truly incredible motives for choosing it as your residence. It’s recreational and outdoor activities boast some of the best in the state, not to mention the affordability of the area, coupled with an awesome community – well, you’ve pretty much hit the jackpot.

Attractions that Charm, and Keep You Coming Back for More!

Because of San Juan County’s great northern location, it is home to some of the state’s best seasonal outdoor recreational activities and historic attractions. In just a quick drive to Aztec, your family can visit the captivating Aztec National Ruins with guided tours and artifact display. Or head in the other direction to the stunning Shiprock Monument, there to visit in all its splendor. Even the Four Corners Monument is something a family can enjoy together over a quick Saturday trip.

And if these attractions aren’t enough, there’s a plethora of play out of doors. Need a nice game of Sunday afternoon golf? Farmington’s Pinon Hills Golf Course is ranked one of the highest in the nation. With two other golf courses boasting spectacular greens, you’re sure to find your hole in one.

But if waders and hooks are your thing, head on over to the Quality Waters, again one of the nation’s best places to fly fish. Or for the more relaxing aquatic outing, there’s always Farmington Lake for the weekday family getaway or Navajo Lake for a nice summer weekend.

What’s Your Price? Here is San Juan County's

We all know just how important the cost of living is when it comes to everyday life. But did you know that San Juan County is below the average cost of living in both housing and grocery? That makes for a nice duo! With quality homes for sale at a median cost of $169,900, (MLS data as of January, 2019) this is well below the US average of $216,000. So not only are you sure to find your “forever” Joanna Gaines home, but you’ll find it without breaking the bank. (Look for a home using our cool tool here)

Beyond housing, what’s a typical family’s next biggest expense? Groceries. Someone has to bring home the bacon, and with San Juan County’s average below that of the nation’s you can stay in that forever house – and live off of more than beans and rice – while still enjoying your home.

Another key factor in where one resides rests in the education provided. Good schools have a way of attracting parents based on classroom sizes, testing scores, and the reputation of good teachers. Here again, San Juan County hits a home run when it comes to their schools. According to research done in 2018, which included teacher to student ratio as well as testing scores, a vast amount of San Juan’s schools reached a stellar 4 out of 5 stars! Quality education is the price you don’t have to worry about sacrificing in San Juan.

What’s Your Community Footprint?

While the cost of living and outdoor attractions really do make San Juan County a fun and exciting place to live, it’s really the community that makes this place shine. With a focus on community awareness and aiding others, San Juan County excels in generosity. There’s the A Fair of the Heart held annually in Farmington, an event that offers a free 5k as well as an entire building dedicated to health screening, health awareness, self-tests, and habits to establish that will help you and your heart stay healthy. There are also several soup kitchens available year round that help those struggling with housing and jobs. And there are organizations like Grace Place that help women of all ages and stages of pregnancy with ultrasounds, prenatal care, and counseling.

But what’s more is the supportive nature of the residents of San Juan County. Time and time again when a family is suffering there is an uprising of support. Whether a family is slammed with unexpected medical bills, struck by cancer, or suffers the loss of their home, the people of San Juan County start Go Fund Me’s, organize events to raise money and shower their fellow community members with gracious care.

Along with its cost of living or fun activities, the community itself makes one feel welcomed, valued, included and appreciated. It breeds a sense of closeness and connectedness despite/especially in hard times. This is what makes San Juan County a truly wonderful place to live. Are you ready to make the move?
